A corporation is a business owned by an individual or a group of individuals who file articles of incorporation with a state so the business can have certain legal powers, privileges, rights, and liabilities. This also includes S corporations and personal service corporations.
A LLC is a business owned by one or more members (including individuals, other LLCs, corporations, and foreign entities) who file articles of organization with a state.
A partnership is a business owned by two or more individuals or groups, that is NOT incorporated or a limited liability company.
A sole proprietor is an individual who is in business for themselves (working as a self employed individual or as an independent contractor).
An estate is a legal entity created when an individual passes away.
A trust is a legal entity established under the laws of a state & taxed according to federal law where one party holds assets for another party.
Trust types include: bankruptcy estates, charitable lead annuity trusts, charitable lead unitrusts, charitable remainder annuity trusts, charitable remainder unitrusts, conservatorships, custodianships, escrows, FNMA (Fannie Mae), GNMA (Ginnie Mae), guardianships, irrevocable trusts, pooled income funds, qualified funeral trusts, receiverships, revocable trusts, settlement funds under IRC Sec 468B, and other trusts not previously listed.
Other legal entities eligible to obtain an EIN number include: block/tenant associations, churches, church-controlled organizations, community or volunteer groups, employer/fiscal agents (under IRC Sec 3504), employer plans (401K, money purchase plans, etc.), farmers' cooperatives, government - federal/military, government - Indian tribal governments, government - state/local, homeowners/condo associations, household employer, individual retirement arrangements ("IRA"), joint ventures, memorial or scholarship funds, national guards, plan administrators, political organizations, PTAs/PTOs or school organizations, real estate mortgage investment conduits ("REMIC"), real estate investment trusts ("REIT"), regulated investment conduits ("RIC"), social or savings clubs, sports teams (community), withholding agents, other non-profit/tax exempt organizations, and other legal structures not previously mentioned.
